Yashere, the sharp-witted British-Nigerian comedian known for her work on The Daily Show and more recently in the Star Trek universe, shared the news on Instagram. What was planned as a small, casual affair quickly grew into a significant international gathering.
"Thought we’d do a lil casual wedding here in Costa Rica," Yashere wrote. "Just a tiny thing, couple close friends & fam. Super casual. No shoes allowed. Sneaks & flip flops only."
That plan, however, was overwhelmed by the response from their loved ones. "45 of my friends & fam flew in from London alone! Plus another 20 of our friends from the US," she added. "It was like a scene from Jaws. WE GONNA NEED A BIGGER BOAT."
The couple, who have been together since 2013, exchanged vows at a beach restaurant before hosting an after-party at their home. Photos from the day show Yashere in a stylish green suit and Fisher in a shimmering gold dress and tiara, both radiating happiness.
A Partnership of Comedy and Academia
While Yashere has built a career making people laugh, from the London comedy circuit to US television, her wife, Nina Rose Fisher, is a respected academic. Fisher is a professor of Criminal Justice at John Jay College in New York City, and also works as a policy writer, researcher, and therapist.
Yashere has previously spoken about her journey with coming out publicly. In a 2021 interview with The Guardian, she explained her initial hesitation. "I had come out to friends and family, but I’d never come out publicly in England because I didn’t want to give them something else to box me in with," she said. The decision to be open on stage, however, proved to be liberating. "The day I came out on stage, my life became like an open book... my comedy got way better after that."
Finding 'Pura Vida' in Costa Rica
The choice of Costa Rica for the wedding was a natural one. The couple has a deep affection for the Central American nation, where they own a home and where Yashere runs a luxury rental business, Gina's Costa Cabins. The country, which legalized same-sex marriage in 2020, has become a popular destination for queer travelers and weddings, known for its lush rainforests and welcoming 'pura vida' lifestyle.
The celebration marks a high point for the couple, who faced a significant loss in 2025 when their primary residence in Altadena, California, was destroyed in a wildfire. Their wedding in a place they love, surrounded by a global community of friends and family, stands as a testament to their resilience and shared joy.
"We’ve never felt so loved & blessed," Yashere concluded in her post. "Wonderful day. We couldn’t be happier."
