A French film that has already resonated with Dutch audiences is set for a wider release this summer, exploring a familiar and often frustrating reality for many same-sex couples: the legal battle for parental recognition. Des Preuves d'Amour (Proofs of Love), which recently won the Audience Award at Amsterdam's Roze Filmdagen, can be seen from July 23 in the Dutch cinemas.

The story follows Céline (Ella Rumpf) and her wife Nadia (Monia Chokri) as they eagerly await the birth of their first child. While they are in it together, it is Nadia who is pregnant. For Céline to be legally recognized as the child's mother in France, she is forced to go through a full adoption process for her own daughter. This bureaucratic journey requires her to gather fifteen official statements from friends and family to "prove" she is fit to be a parent.

The film chronicles this process from Céline's perspective, focusing on the emotional and psychological weight of having to justify her role within her own family. It examines the search for one's place as a parent when faced with legal and societal hurdles that question that very position.

From Personal Experience to the Big Screen

Director Alice Douard based the film on her own life, lending an authentic and personal touch to the narrative. While the subject matter is serious, the film is described as a moving yet light and humorous portrait of queer parenthood. It avoids melodrama in favor of an intimate look at the final months of pregnancy from the non-biological partner's point of view.

Des Preuves d'Amour held its world premiere at the prestigious Semaine de la Critique section of the Cannes Film Festival. For audiences in the Netherlands, its most notable achievement is winning the Audience Award at the Roze Filmdagen (Pink Film Days) in Amsterdam, signaling its strong connection with the local LGBTQ+ community.
