A Generational Pop Moment in the Desert

The Queen of Pop appeared as Carpenter performed her song "Juno." The music then transitioned into Madonna's 1990 hit "Vogue," which the two artists performed together. Their joint set also included a rendition of "Like A Prayer" and what appeared to be a new, unreleased track, sparking speculation among attendees and viewers online.

A Full Circle Moment
Addressing the crowd, Madonna, 65, reflected on her own history with the festival. "20 years ago today, I performed at Coachella," she said, referencing her 2006 appearance in the dance tent to promote her album Confessions on a Dance Floor. "It’s like a full circle moment, very meaningful for me."
She also offered a brief astrological observation, noting the new moon in Taurus meant that "we need to work on our communication skills" and "avoid confrontations." She used the moment to speak on the unifying power of music. "The great thing about music is that it brings people together, am I right?" she asked the audience. "It’s the one place that people have to put their differences aside... and just everybody have a good time together."
Passing the Torch
The collaboration is significant as it pairs a legendary gay icon with a rising pop star who has cultivated a strong following within the LGBTQ+ community. In a lighter moment, Madonna joked about the height difference between herself and the 24-year-old Carpenter. "This is probably the first time I’ve ever performed with someone who’s shorter than me," she said. "So, thank you for giving me that experience."
Carpenter's set was not short on other celebrity appearances. Actress Geena Davis performed a monologue, following her Thelma and Louise co-star Susan Sarandon's appearance during the first weekend. Actor Terry Crews also made a brief cameo, referencing his role in the film White Chicks.
Madonna's performance comes just days after she confirmed a new album, reportedly titled Confessions II, is expected to be released this July.
