American R&B singer Kehlani has released their fifth full-length album, titled Kehlani, coinciding with their 31st birthday on April 24. The new record is already receiving positive feedback from music critics, who have highlighted its sophisticated R&B production and its focus on queer and non-binary experiences.

The album features a notable list of guest artists, including industry veterans such as Missy Elliott, Usher, and Lil Wayne, alongside contemporary stars like Cardi B. It serves as the official follow-up to their 2024 projects, Crash and While We Wait 2, and marks a significant point in the artist's career.

A Personal and Thematic Milestone

Kehlani, who identifies as a lesbian and uses she/they pronouns, has been open about their identity journey, previously stating they are "on the non-binary scale." This personal context appears to be a central theme of the new album. Music publication Clash noted in its review that the album features "songs that explore the fullness of female/non-binary sexuality," praising the artist's vocal performance and harmonies.

This sentiment was echoed by NME, which described the album as a project where Kehlani "finds security in her own skin." The review pointed to the "soul-bearing storytelling and relatability that has always set Kehlani apart," suggesting the self-titled album is a culmination of their personal and artistic growth.

Critical Reception

The initial reviews for Kehlani have been strong. Beyond the thematic praise, critics have commended the album's musical direction. NME called it a "satisfying time capsule of R&B, which leans into nostalgia and celebrates how far the singer has come."

In a comprehensive track-by-track review, Billboard ranked all 17 songs, naming "Unlearn" as the standout track. The publication described the song as "the culmination of every emotional and narrative thread explored across Kehlani," adding that it showcases the artist's journey toward self-love and partnership.

While no European tour dates have been announced in support of the album, Kehlani's music has a consistent following in the Netherlands. The album is now available on all major streaming platforms.
