Man Arrested Following Blaze at Pink Punters

MILTON KEYNES, UK – A 51-year-old man is in custody following a significant fire that has destroyed Pink Punters, a prominent LGBTQ+ nightclub in the English city of Milton Keynes. The man was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life after the blaze broke out in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Emergency services were called to the venue on Watling Street shortly after 2 a.m. At the time, the club was filled with hundreds of guests. Staff and security have been praised by authorities for their swift and calm evacuation, which ensured that no one was injured despite the fire's rapid spread. Up to 12 fire engines were deployed to tackle the flames, which caused extensive damage to the building's structure.

Thames Valley Police have confirmed the arrest and are conducting a full investigation. Chief Superintendent Emma Baillie, the police commander for Milton Keynes, stated, “This was a significant fire in which a large number of people had to be evacuated. Thankfully no one was injured, and staff at the venue worked quickly and effectively to ensure everyone was safely evacuated.” Police have urged the public not to speculate on the motive as the investigation is in its early stages.

A Vital Community Space Lost

For over two decades, Pink Punters has been more than just a nightclub; it has served as a cornerstone of the LGBTQ+ community in the region, providing a rare dedicated space for socialising and events. The loss of the physical building has been met with an outpouring of support and sadness from across the UK.

The sentiment is a familiar one for communities, including those in the Netherlands, that rely on such venues as hubs for connection and safety. In a statement, owner Frank McMahon expressed his heartbreak over the destruction but relief that his staff and customers were safe. “The building may be gone, but the community, the memories and the spirit remain,” McMahon said. “Pink Punters has always been about people.”

Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as staff shouted for everyone to leave. “It was just a normal night, and then out of nowhere all the staff were screaming, ‘you need to get out now’,” club-goer Molly Firman told reporters, calling the experience “truly devastating.”

Police are appealing for anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward as their enquiries continue.
