For decades, Linda Perry has been one of the most influential, yet often unseen, forces in pop and rock music. As the voice of 4 Non Blondes, she gave the world the enduring anthem "What's Up?" But for the last 30 years, she has primarily operated behind the curtain, writing career-defining hits for artists like Christina Aguilera ("Beautiful"), P!nk ("Get the Party Started"), and Alicia Keys.
In a recent interview, Perry described this period as a form of "hiding," a conscious retreat from the spotlight after her first solo album was shelved by her label in the 90s. Now, at 61, she is stepping back into the light on her own terms with a new solo album, Let It Die Here, and an accompanying documentary that captures her raw, unfiltered creative process.
The documentary, she explains, was never intended to be a deep personal exposé. It began as a friend filming her songwriting sessions for social media content. However, the camera captured something far more vulnerable: a personal breakdown and a profound struggle to write for herself after decades of channeling other people's truths.
"I could write a song for everybody... but I couldn't write a song for myself," Perry shared. "I couldn't give myself that advice, that beautiful power that I give to other people. I couldn't find it."
Watching the final film was, in her words, like viewing a horror movie through her fingers. Yet, she approved its release, recognizing its unflinching honesty in an era where authenticity is often manufactured. "This is the realest thing I've seen in a long time. Unfortunately, Linda, it's you, but you just need to let it go," she recalled thinking.
A Queer Voice in the Mainstream
Perry's work, particularly on P!nk's 2001 album Missundaztood, resonated deeply with young queer audiences. She attributes this to both P!nk's outspoken allyship and her own unique perspective as an out musician. She shared an anecdote about writing the track "Lonely Girl" for P!nk, composing and recording it while the singer was asleep on the studio floor, only to play it for her when she woke up.
As she prepares to tour with queer folk-rock icons the Indigo Girls, Perry reflects on her own role within the LGBTQ+ community. She candidly admits she hasn't always been the "best role model," citing past frustrations with what she saw as segregation within the community itself. However, she views the tour as an opportunity to learn from the Indigo Girls, whom she considers mentors.
"They have really paved the way for queer songwriters, artists and people in the creative space because of their incredible storytelling, their relatability and who they are," Perry said. "They've always been out and open and confident and empowering."
