Amsterdam, NL – A new historical monument, the Walk of Pride, is preparing to launch in 2026, and its organizers are calling on the community to help document the lives of the figures it will honor.

The project, a collaboration between IHLIA LGBTI Heritage, the Homomonument, and Stichting GALA, will create a permanent walking route in the city center. The path will feature more than 50 tiles running from Dam Square to the Westermarkt, each bearing the name of a significant national or international figure who contributed to LGBTQIA+ emancipation.

To create a lasting educational resource, the project is now seeking volunteer writers to move beyond the names on the tiles and tell the full stories of these individuals.

The Role of a Biographer

Volunteers are asked to research and write a comprehensive and respectful biographical article of 800-1000 words for one or more of the honored individuals. While short biographies are currently available on the project's website, these new articles are intended to provide a much deeper look into the lives, work, and impact of each person.

The role is open to anyone with a passion for LGBTQIA+ history and strong writing skills in either Dutch or English. Writers should be prepared to conduct research to ensure their articles are accurate and informative. IHLIA has noted that its archival material can be made available upon request to assist with this process.

What's Involved

This is a volunteer position, but the organizers are offering several benefits to contributors:

  • Author Credit: Your name will be published alongside your article on the official Walk of Pride website.
  • Collaborative Sessions: Two writing sessions will be held in Amsterdam for volunteers to work together, network, and receive support. Food and drinks will be provided.
    • Friday, 22 May 2026 | 15:30 – 18:00
    • Saturday, 6 June 2026 | 15:30 – 18:00 (at Transgender Netwerk)
  • Travel Reimbursement: Travel costs for attending the writing sessions will be reimbursed up to €50 upon presentation of public transport receipts.
  • Appreciation Gifts: Contributors will receive a Walk of Pride gadget and a gift from the IHLIA archives, which may include books, buttons, or magazines.

How to Participate

Those interested in contributing are asked to send an email to info@walkofpride.amsterdam. The email should include:

  1. The number of biographical articles you are able to commit to writing.
  2. Any preferences for specific individuals from the official list of honorees. Organizers will try to accommodate requests but cannot guarantee them.
  3. (Optional) Any documentation of previous research experience related to one of the figures.

The deadline for submitting at least one completed article is 7 June 2026. All submissions will undergo a final editing process by the organization before publication in late June 2026.
