The Spanish city of València will host the 12th edition of the Gay Games from June 27 to July 4, 2026. The international event, held every four years, combines a multi-sport athletic competition with a broad cultural festival, drawing participants from across the global LGBTQ+ community and beyond. Organizers report that over 8,500 individuals have already registered to take part.
The core principle of the Gay Games is participation and inclusion, with events open to all individuals regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or athletic skill level. The ten-day schedule is designed to foster community and visibility through both sport and cultural exchange.
A Diverse Athletic Programme
The sporting component of the games will be extensive, with 37 disciplines spread across various venues in the city. A central Gay Games Village will serve as a hub for athletes and visitors. The programme includes a mix of traditional and unique sports:
- Team Sports: Competitions for basketball are scheduled at l'Alqueria del Basket, a modern training facility. Football matches will take place in the unique setting of the Túria riverbed park, with rugby and volleyball also on the roster.
- Individual and Pair Sports: Tennis players will compete on clay courts, while golf will be held near the Albufera Natural Park. The schedule also includes badminton and bowling.
- Aquatics and Endurance: Swimming events will be hosted at the Parc de l’Oest complex. The city's Mediterranean marina will be the venue for sailing, and a triathlon will challenge participants across multiple disciplines.
- Athletics and Running: A full track and field programme (including long jump, high jump, and shot put) is planned, alongside 5k and 10k runs that will route through the scenic Túria park.
The list also features less conventional competitive events such as dance sports and the traditional French game of pétanque, ensuring a wide range of activities for different interests.
Culture, Ceremony, and Commemoration
Beyond the athletic competitions, the Gay Games will feature a significant cultural programme. The event will be framed by large-scale Opening and Closing ceremonies, which will include a parade for all participants.
Several events will focus on community history and remembrance. These include the International Rainbow Memorial Run and an exhibition of the Memorial Quilt. The cultural schedule is further enriched by film and graphic design showcases, video mapping displays, and sustainable pyrotechnic shows.
The Diversity Fest València will run concurrently, offering music and entertainment. A highlight for many will be the specialized dance galas, including the Dancesport Gala Ball scheduled for July 3rd.
An Accessible Destination
For those considering attending from the Netherlands, València is a well-connected European city with direct flights from Amsterdam and other major hubs. The event's timing in early summer offers a chance to combine participation or spectating with a visit to Spain's third-largest city, known for its architecture, beaches, and vibrant culture.
