The field for the 2026 Gayming Awards' most prestigious category, Game of the Year, has been set. The six nominated titles represent a broad spectrum of the video game industry, from highly anticipated sequels and major studio releases to independent projects that captured significant public attention over the past year.

This year's list includes games noted for direct LGBTQ+ character representation, as well as others celebrated for their innovative gameplay and narrative design. The selection highlights a year where both large-scale and independent games made significant cultural and artistic impacts. Here is a closer look at the six contenders.

The Nominees

Hades II
Developer Supergiant Games follows up its acclaimed 2020 title with a sequel centered on Melinoë, the bisexual princess of the Underworld. The game expands on the fast-paced, rogue-lite combat and deep narrative integration that defined its predecessor, while placing an openly queer protagonist at the forefront of its mythological tale.

Ghost of Yōtei
This open-world action title has been recognized for both its commercial performance and its approach to representation. The game's lead character, Atsu, is voiced by nonbinary performer Erika Ishii, bringing a prominent queer artist to a major studio production. The story, a revenge tale set in historic Japan, has been praised for its visuals and voice cast.

Hollow Knight: Silksong
After years of anticipation, developer Team Cherry released the sequel to its celebrated 2D action-platformer. The game, which focuses on the character Hornet, reportedly sold over seven million copies and was noted for expanding on the mechanics and world-building that made the original a standout indie success.

South of Midnight
An action-adventure game that delves into the folklore of the American deep south. The narrative follows protagonist Hazel Flood as she confronts magical creatures and explores themes of trauma through a culturally specific lens. Its unique setting and storytelling have made it a notable entry this year.

Blue Prince
This puzzle game earned critical acclaim for its sophisticated design, which merges mystery-solving with narrative tension. Players take on the role of a caretaker in a large manor, where they have control over the layout of the rooms, shaping their path through the game's challenges. The title previously received honors for its design at the D.I.C.E. Awards.

Ball x Pit
An independent title that combines classic brick-breaker gameplay with the strategic depth of a rogue-lite. Its success is attributed to evolving a simple concept into a complex system with a variety of characters and challenges, demonstrating the creative potential within the indie development scene.

The winner will be announced at the upcoming Gayming Awards ceremony.
