A Modern Midsummer's Mayhem

Author Samantha Allen, known for works like Patricia Wants to Cuddle and Real Queer America, has released her latest novel, Puck. The book presents a contemporary romantic comedy inspired by Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, centering on a nonbinary protagonist who navigates the complexities of love and friendship in a decidedly modern setting.

The story introduces Puck, a thirty-year-old producer for a controversial reality dating show called "Homewreckers," where their job is to orchestrate drama and breakups for television. An expert in manufactured chaos, Puck finds their professional skills bleeding into their personal life when their college roommate, Mia, announces her engagement to Damon—a man Puck believes is entirely wrong for her.

The plot unfolds over a week of wedding festivities at an upscale resort. Convinced the marriage will lead to misery, Puck takes it upon themself to meddle, aiming to rearrange the romantic pairings among their old friends. The situation is complicated by the presence of Mia's recent ex-boyfriend, Zander, and another friend, Lena, who has long held feelings for the groom-to-be, Damon.

Queer Identity and Complicated Friendships

At the heart of the novel is its protagonist, Puck, a character who brings a sharp, witty, and distinctly queer perspective to the classic trickster archetype. The story explores themes of identity and belonging, particularly the experience of being the sole queer person in a formative friend group that has largely followed a more traditional path.

Puck's plans for romantic sabotage are complicated by their own unexpected connection with the maid of honor, a type-A personality determined to see the wedding through without a hitch. Their dynamic provides a central romantic subplot that explores attraction and conflict amidst the unfolding chaos.

Samantha Allen, who holds a Ph.D. in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, brings a nuanced understanding of queer dynamics to the narrative. The book is described as a celebration of the friendships that support individuals through life's chaotic moments, a theme that is likely to resonate with many in the LGBTQ+ community.

Availability

Puck is positioned as a rom-com for the modern era, blending Shakespearean mischief with contemporary themes. The 288-page paperback is available in English through major booksellers in the Netherlands and online.
