During World Pride, the Amsterdam City Archives shines a spotlight on the colorful history of drag in Amsterdam. Drag in Amsterdam shows how this culture and form of expression developed in the city: from 17th-century theater to Hartjesdag on the Zeedijk, from cabaret and club culture to drag bingo, Drag Olympics, Superball, activism, and Pride.
Self-expression, creativity, freedom, and visibility take center stage. Personal stories from drag artists bring the exhibition to life and show how drag in Amsterdam has been making room for expression, community, and imagination for generations.
In addition to the exhibition in the hall, the Treasury features a supplementary Claim Your Space presentation about Stichting Hellun Zelluf, founded by Hellun Zelluf and her drag family. In the 1990s, this foundation played a significant role in the fight against AIDS, including through benefit shows, humor, and education on safe sex.
The exhibition was curated by the Amsterdam City Archives in close collaboration with drag artists from the city.
