The popular vertical drama 'Waterboy', known for its short, bingeable episodes, will continue the story of its central gay couple in a new season titled 'Second Down', premiering this month on the ReelShort app.

The streaming platform ReelShort has confirmed a second season for its popular gay sports romance, Waterboy. The sequel, titled Waterboy: Second Down, is scheduled to premiere on the mobile-first platform on June 16, continuing the story of its two protagonists, Kaden and Donovan.

The series is part of a growing catalogue of 'vertical dramas'—serialized shows with episodes lasting only one to two minutes, designed specifically for smartphone viewing. This format allows for quick consumption on the go or binge-watching an entire season, which typically has a combined runtime similar to a feature film.

A New Chapter for Kaden and Donovan

Waterboy: Second Down picks up three years after the conclusion of the first season, which ended with a difficult breakup. The new season finds the main characters in reversed circumstances. Donovan Miller (Sky Kawai) is now a superstar quarterback, while Kaden (Declan Clifford), who once broke Donovan's heart to protect his own athletic career, is struggling as an intern at a sports agency that now represents Donovan.

The official synopsis describes the central conflict:

"Donovan says he came to Boston for revenge, but the tension between them suggests something much deeper. As old feelings reignite, the pair must navigate a world where the truth about their relationship could destroy Donovan’s career. Falling for each other again may cost them everything."

A Niche for Queer Storytelling

The lead actors, Declan Clifford and Sky Kawai, have become a popular pairing on the ReelShort platform, also starring opposite each other in other gay-themed vertical dramas such as Poolboy and the western romance Stableboy. This recurring casting suggests the platform has found a dedicated audience for their on-screen chemistry.

ReelShort has carved out a niche by producing a steady stream of LGBTQ+ content, particularly in the romance genre. While major Hollywood studios and streaming services have been slow to consistently produce gay love stories, ReelShort has leaned into the demand.

"After Poolboy and Waterboy helped pioneer successful boy-love storytelling in the vertical format, we knew there was a strong appetite for more stories in this space," said Reelshort Studio Head Kate Tucker Fahlsing in a statement. "With Waterboy: Second Down, we're excited to deliver our first true sequel, picking up where the original left off and giving audiences the chance to continue Donovan and Kaden's journey."

Watch the Trailer

The trailer for the new season suggests a focus on romantic tension, professional stakes, and the unresolved history between the two leads. Waterboy: Second Down premieres on the ReelShort app on June 16, 2026.
