Tens of thousands marched in London's annual Pride parade, where a festive atmosphere was underscored by urgent warnings from activists about rising hate crimes and significant delays in trans healthcare, an issue also familiar in the Netherlands.

London’s streets were filled with colour and sound on Saturday as more than 35,000 people from over 600 groups participated in the annual Pride in London parade. While the event was a vibrant celebration of LGBTQ+ identity, with an estimated one million spectators lining the route from Hyde Park Corner to Whitehall, it also carried a significant political message about the erosion of community rights in the UK.

Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, marched at the front of the parade, joining a diverse crowd that included corporate sponsors like Tesco and Ikea, as well as community groups and activists. The procession featured floats with dancers and music, creating a festive atmosphere on a warm summer day.

A Parade with a Purpose

Organisers, Pride in London, stated that this year's march was not just a celebration but also a necessary protest. They highlighted several key issues facing the community, including:

  • The urgent need for improved trans healthcare, with NHS waiting lists for gender-affirming care now exceeding four years in some areas.
  • The failure to implement a fully trans-inclusive ban on conversion therapy, despite a government pledge made in 2018.
  • A rise in hate crimes, with Home Office figures showing over 18,000 reported incidents motivated by sexual orientation in 2025.
  • The ongoing closure of LGBTQ+ venues, with 58% of London's dedicated spaces having shut down since 2006.

The concern over extended waiting lists for gender-affirming care is not unique to the UK, echoing similar challenges faced by the trans community in the Netherlands and across Europe.

Veteran activist Peter Tatchell, who also marched, drew attention to international issues, stating, "We're marching in London Pride today to highlight the fact that at the World Cup, which is ongoing right now, 11 countries ban gay footballers from their team – that's against Fifa rules, but Fifa is doing nothing."

Lisa Power, a co-founder of the advocacy group Stonewall, added a stark warning about the current political climate. "Right now, we have a government and institutions meant to defend our rights that are attacking trans people's rights, and the rest of ours will follow," she said.

Parade Highlights and a Pop Rumour

Performances at the main stage in Trafalgar Square included artists Beth Ditto and MNEK. Rumours of a surprise appearance by Madonna, who had just launched a new album in the city, circulated throughout the day. However, organisers later confirmed she would not be attending.

The parade also marked the official launch of London's bid to host WorldPride in 2032, an international event that celebrates LGBTQ+ pride on a global scale.

Rebecca Paisis, interim CEO of Pride in London, emphasised the event's dual nature. "This year's campaign is a reminder that whilst the community often faces challenges in isolation, it is by coming together that we can change history," she stated.
