With World Pride set to take over Amsterdam from July 31 to August 8, 2026, local organizations are preparing to welcome the global LGBTQ+ community. Among them, Aspec Nederland has put together a comprehensive, week-long program specifically for asexual, aromantic, and other aspec-identifying individuals. The schedule offers a mix of social events, cultural trips, and participation in the main Pride festivities.
The initiative, a collaboration with the Dutch Organisation for Asexuality (NOA) and supported by Pride Amsterdam's Empowerment Fund, aims to create a welcoming space for aspec people from the Netherlands and abroad to connect during the international event.
Community and Connection
The week kicks off with an opening event designed for making new friends. It includes a platonic speed-dating session and a series of traditional Dutch games like 'spijkerpoepen' (a game involving a nail, a string, and a bottle) and 'koekhappen' (biting a piece of cake off a string). For those looking to explore the city, a scavenger hunt through Amsterdam is also on the schedule.
Later in the week, attendees can escape the city bustle with a 13.6 km nature walk. The route starts at Baarn train station and ends at Hollandsche Rading, with a planned stop at a traditional Dutch pancake restaurant for lunch.
Dutch Culture and Day Trips
The program includes several excursions to notable Dutch attractions:
- Efteling: A full day is planned at the iconic fantasy-themed amusement park in Kaatsheuvel, known for its fairytale-inspired rides and attractions.
- Rijksmuseum: A visit to Amsterdam's national museum, home to works by Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Van Gogh.
- Artis Zoo: A trip to the historic zoo in the center of Amsterdam. Organizers note that this activity overlaps with the nature walk, so participants will need to choose one.
- Castlefest: The week begins during Castlefest, a large fantasy and folk festival. While it's part of the suggested itinerary, tickets for this event must be purchased separately.
Visibility and Education
A key part of the week is focused on aspec representation and history. An 'Ace Talks' event will feature speakers including Aurea, an author discussing aromantic experiences, and the president of NOA. The full lineup of activists and speakers is expected to be confirmed closer to the date.
Participants will also have the opportunity for a free tour of IHLIA, the Netherlands' official LGBTIQ+ heritage archive located in Amsterdam's main library (OBA). The week's programming is anchored by participation in two of World Pride's main events: watching the world-famous Canal Parade on August 1 and joining the official WorldPride March to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights globally.
