A celebration of Pride in Amersfoort was overshadowed by violence on Saturday night when a 52-year-old man was seriously assaulted on his way home from the event, repots AD. The attack occurred around 11:30 PM on the Stadsring, near the Varkensmarkt crossing.

The victim was walking with a friend when they were confronted by a group of three to four young men. According to reports, the attackers shouted homophobic slurs, including "vieze homo's" (dirty gays), before launching the physical assault. The victim suffered a severe concussion and a broken jaw and was transported to a hospital for treatment.

Police have confirmed they are treating the incident with high priority and are strongly considering a homophobic motive. They have issued a call for witnesses who may have been in the area at the time of the assault.

Suspect Description and Witness Appeal

Authorities have released a description of one of the suspects: a young man estimated to be around 20 years old, with a light complexion, dark curly hair, and wearing a white t-shirt. The group fled the scene immediately after the attack.

Police are urging anyone with information, or who may have dashcam or mobile phone footage from the Stadsring area between 11:15 PM and 11:45 PM on Saturday, to come forward. Information can be shared by contacting the police at 0900-8844 or anonymously through Meld Misdaad Anoniem at 0800-7000.

Community Reaction

The incident has sent a shockwave through the local community, which had just concluded a successful and festive Pride celebration. Lennart Lenskens, chairman of Amersfoort Pride, described the attack as a "deep black mark" on the day's events.

"It is terrible that this can still happen," Lenskens stated, emphasizing that such violence highlights the continued necessity of Pride. "This is exactly why we do it, to show that we are here and that we will not be intimidated."

The assault serves as a stark reminder of the safety concerns that persist for the LGBTQ+ community, even during events intended to be safe celebrations of identity and visibility.
