A new independent film is offering a personal and nuanced look into the rarely-seen world of competitive bodybuilding, exploring the complex intersection of faith, family, and queer identity. 'Test,' written by and starring Brock Yurich, is a semi-autobiographical drama that follows a young man in Ohio whose sculpted physique hides a deep internal conflict.

The story centers on Eddie Owens (Yurich), a dedicated bodybuilder who funds his expensive passion—including performance-enhancing drugs—by secretly working as a camboy. His life is dominated by his intense training regimen and his co-dependent relationship with his devoutly religious mother, Joanne (Tammy Blanchard). She acts as his biggest cheerleader, applying his spray tan before competitions, while also representing the faith that complicates his emerging sexuality.

A Personal Story of Muscle and Vulnerability

Eddie's carefully compartmentalized world begins to shift when he seeks out a new, more experienced coach, Mike (Mike Edward), to push him to the next level. This professional decision soon becomes personal as the two men begin a secret affair. The new relationship, combined with his mother's discovery of his online work, forces Eddie's worlds to collide. This brings him into conflict with his church, led by a pastor played by Matthew Morrison, and his own sense of self.

The film explores the concept of the body as a form of armor—a physical shell built to protect a vulnerable interior. For many in the LGBTQ+ community, the film's depiction of the struggle between religious belief and personal identity will be a familiar one. Reviews suggest 'Test' handles these themes with a sensitivity that avoids easy answers or overt melodrama, focusing instead on the quiet, internal battles of its protagonist.

Directed by Sam McConnell, the film recently premiered at the Provincetown Film Festival, where it was well-received by audiences, sharing the Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature. The positive reception points to a story that resonates for its emotional honesty and its focus on a hard-won journey toward self-acceptance, set against the unique backdrop of the American Midwest's bodybuilding subculture.
