A new French-language original series from HBO Max, Paolo, is set to explore the fine line between admiration and obsession. The seven-episode psychological thriller centers on the intense relationship between two men who reconnect years after their school days, with one's political rise triggering a dangerous fixation in the other.
The series follows Paolo, played by Jérôme Niel, a man leading an unremarkable life who crosses paths with Théophane (Yoann Gasiorowski), a former classmate now running for mayor in their provincial hometown. Initially drawn in by Théophane's charisma and ambition, Paolo joins his campaign. However, his involvement soon deepens into an invasive and unsettling obsession, set against a backdrop of local political maneuvering and social divides.
The project comes from creator and director Sébastien Marnier, whose previous work includes the thrillers Irréprochable and L'Origine du mal, suggesting a tense and atmospheric tone for the series. The role of the magnetic politician Théophane is played by Yoann Gasiorowski, a resident actor of the prestigious Comédie-Française, France's most renowned theatre company.
