Free Willie, the Amsterdam bar known for its unique clothes-free concept, has temporarily closed its doors. In a brief statement, the management confirmed the closure as of September 2026, stating they need time to "consider our next move" and thanking customers for their support.
The venue, which opened in December 2023, was an experimental addition to Amsterdam's queer nightlife. Operated by the creative team behind the well-established Club Church, Free Willie distinguished itself as the city's first dedicated naturist bar for the queer community.
A Social Space, Without Clothes
The core concept was straightforward: upon entry, guests checked everything but their footwear into a cloakroom. The mandatory nudity was intended to create an atmosphere of equality and vulnerability, shifting the focus from fashion or social status to direct interaction.
Despite the nakedness, the bar was positioned primarily as a social lounge rather than a cruising space. Its bright, modern interior featured a central pool table, a comfortable lounge area, and a space for art exhibitions, all designed to encourage conversation and a relaxed social environment.
Community and Inclusivity
While the bar's primary audience consisted of cisgender and transgender gay and queer men, its policy explicitly welcomed trans women, non-binary individuals, and others from the wider LGBTQ+ community. This approach aimed to carve out a specific, yet inclusive, niche within the city.
The closure marks a pause for a venue that attempted a different model for queer socialising in Amsterdam. The management's message leaves the door open for a potential future, but for now, a distinctive space in the city's nightlife scene is on hold.
