This week, at the Republican National Convention (RNC) in Dallas, Texas, the tradition continued with glorious, predictable chaos.
Reports started flooding in that Grindr was experiencing significant outages in the Dallas area, right as the convention was in full swing. A quick look at Downdetector confirmed it: a massive spike in outage reports appeared just as delegates were settling in for an evening of chest-thumping speeches against everything 'woke'. The irony is so thick you could cut it with a poorly-applied fake tan.
It's a phenomenon we've seen time and time again at events like CPAC and other MAGA-fests. It seems that for a certain type of conservative man, nothing gets the blood pumping quite like railing against gay rights by day and scrolling for a 'discreet' hookup by night.
So, what broke the camel's back this time?
While the sheer concentration of repressed energy is usually enough to crash the app, this year had a special catalyst. In a truly baffling move, the RNC's opening 'hype video' featured a lingering, rather flattering shot of... Hasan Piker.
For those not deep into US political streaming, Piker is a hugely popular, very handsome, and extremely left-wing commentator. He is, to put it mildly, not their guy. Why his photo was included in a montage meant to fire up the Republican base is anyone's guess. Perhaps a video editor with a sense of humour, or maybe someone on the RNC media team just has a crush. Either way, the internet immediately dubbed it the 'thirst trap that broke Grindr'.
Piker himself joked on X (formerly Twitter) that his photo might be the thing that finally turns Texas blue. A noble goal, but for now, it seems its main achievement was turning hundreds of Republican thumbs blue from frantic scrolling.
While we watch the political theatre unfold from across the Atlantic, it’s a darkly funny reminder of the hypocrisy that often fuels anti-LGBTQ+ politics. These are often the same people who vote for policies that harm our community, all while secretly using the very apps that connect us.
So, a moment of silence for the Grindr servers in Dallas. They fought valiantly but were no match for the potent combination of political repression and a surprise socialist thirst trap. You can't make this stuff up.
