A court in Düsseldorf, Germany, has sentenced a 30-year-old Swiss man to two years and eight months in prison for a scheme that targeted and exploited vulnerable gay teenagers.
The man was convicted of forced prostitution, human trafficking, pimping, and the distribution of drugs. The court found that between 2020 and 2022, he and his partner used social media to connect with minors, aged 15 to 17 at the time. They would invite the teens to parties at their shared apartment in Düsseldorf, luring them with promises of love, a luxurious lifestyle, or a permanent place to stay.
During these parties, the teenagers were made compliant with alcohol and drugs. In at least two confirmed cases, the perpetrators then offered the drugged youths to older men for prostitution.
The trial was held behind closed doors to protect the identities of the young victims. Prosecutors had initially sought a four-and-a-half-year sentence, while the defense argued for a suspended sentence. The presiding judge noted that the final sentence was comparatively lenient, attributing this to the defendant's full confession and the unusually long duration of the legal proceedings. An initial charge of rape was dropped after the court determined it could not be proven.
The case also involved a 25-year-old co-defendant, the man's partner, who was sentenced separately under juvenile law. He received a €4,000 fine and one week of youth detention for the possession of child and youth pornography, a sentence he had already served during pre-trial custody.
The two men were first arrested in July 2022 following several reports. While the younger partner was released, the 30-year-old absconded and became a fugitive. An international search was launched, leading to his re-arrest in late August 2022.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of online grooming, where perpetrators often prey on the vulnerabilities of young LGBTQ+ people by offering a false sense of acceptance and security.
