Transgender lawmaker Zooey Zephyr, who was famously barred from the Montana House floor for defending trans rights, has won another term after running unopposed, cementing her role as a key political voice in the US.

Zooey Zephyr, the first openly transgender legislator in the US state of Montana, has secured another term in the state's House of Representatives. In a clear sign of her strong local support, she ran for her Missoula-area district completely unopposed.

Her re-election marks another chapter in a political career that has drawn international attention, not just for her presence as a trans woman in a conservative state legislature, but for her steadfast resistance against anti-LGBTQ+ legislation.

A Symbol of Resistance

Zephyr became a prominent national figure in April 2023. During a heated debate over a bill seeking to ban gender-affirming medical care for minors, she delivered a powerful warning to her colleagues who supported the measure.

"If you vote yes on this bill and yes on these amendments, I hope the next time there’s an invocation, when you bow your heads in prayer, you see the blood on your hands," she stated from the House floor.

Republican leadership demanded she apologize for her remarks. When she refused, the Republican-controlled House voted to formally censure her, barring her from being present on the chamber floor for the remainder of the legislative session. The move, intended to silence her, had the opposite effect. Zephyr continued to represent her constituents by working from a bench in the hallway outside the chamber, an image that quickly became a symbol of defiance against political silencing.

Return and Continued Advocacy

Despite the controversy, or perhaps because of it, voters returned her to office in the 2024 election, restoring her full legislative privileges. Since her return to the House floor, Zephyr has remained a vocal advocate for queer rights.

In March 2025, she was a key voice in the opposition to a Republican-led proposal that aimed to penalize drag performers. The legislation ultimately failed after several Republicans sided with Democrats to vote it down.

She has also consistently challenged efforts to restrict transgender people's access to public facilities, celebrating a court ruling in April 2025 that temporarily blocked a restrictive bathroom law.

A View from Europe

Zephyr's political journey in a deeply polarized American state offers a stark look at the front lines of the fight for transgender rights. While the political landscape in the Netherlands and Europe differs, her story serves as a significant case study in political resilience and the power of representation. Her unopposed re-election demonstrates that even in the face of targeted legislative hostility, a strong community voice can not only endure but thrive.
