A new initiative in Amsterdam is providing a dedicated space for gay and bisexual men to navigate the significant life transition of retirement. The 'PowerVol Pride' workshop, organized by the volunteer organization Gilde Amsterdam, is a two-day program designed to address the unique questions and challenges that arise after leaving the workforce.
For many, a career provides daily structure, social connections, and a core part of one's identity. The workshop aims to help participants redefine this new phase of life, often called the 'third life phase,' by exploring new sources of purpose and community.
A Focus on Shared Experience
The program goes beyond general retirement planning by focusing on topics specifically relevant to gay and bi men of this generation. It creates a forum for discussing a rich, shared history, including the fight for emancipation and the impact of the AIDS crisis. The sessions also explore how these formative experiences influence their perspectives today.
Key themes include:
- How to build new social networks, both online and in person.
- Navigating identity and visibility as an older queer man in a rapidly changing world.
- Discussing personal journeys with coming out and self-acceptance later in life.
- Exploring what participants still want to achieve for themselves and for others.
Feedback from previous attendees highlights the value of connecting with peers. "I discovered what actually gives me energy at this moment," one participant shared. Another found it helpful to hear how others were handling similar situations, saying, "It helped me enormously."
