This summer, during WorldPride 2026, the exhibition Queer Amsterdam, the pink city opens. It's a major exhibition about the eventful and special history of the Amsterdam LGBTQIA+ community. A cultural-historical story about love, exclusion, courage, struggle, and freedom, told in a place that was once the scene of ecclesiastical doctrine and exclusion.
De Nieuwe Kerk is creating this exhibition together with the LGBTQIA+ community to mark 25 years since civil marriage was opened up to everyone in the Netherlands, with Amsterdam as a global pioneer. The event also celebrates 30 years of Pride Amsterdam and the 80th anniversary of COC Netherlands. At the same time, the exhibition shows that acquired freedoms are vulnerable; a large part of the community still faces discrimination and violence today.
Queer Amsterdam, the pink city takes place on the occasion of WorldPride Amsterdam 2026. The exhibition has been realized in collaboration with a large number of organizations, museums, and experts, with IHLIA LGBTI Heritage as the main lender and partner. We thank the Amsterdam queer communities for their indispensable contribution through the focus groups of the Queer Museum Foundation.
