Step into a glittering, chaotic world where the lines between reality and illusion blur! In ancient Athens four lovers flee into the woods to escape an arranged marriage, only to find themselves caught in a battle between the Fairy King and Fairy Queen. Desires run wild, power dynamics begin to shift, and reality and fantasy merge into one.
Featuring a vibrant international cast from Amsterdam’s English-language theatre scene, this energetic production embraces the play’s queer spirit with humour, sensuality and theatrical magic.
About the show
A Midsummer Night’s Dream is William Shakespeare’s most beloved romp through the woods—a chaotic, shimmering comedy where the lines between reality and illusion are as thin as moonlight.
Set in ancient Athens and a nearby enchanted forest, the play follows four young lovers who flee into the woods to escape a forced marriage, only to find themselves caught in the crossfire of a domestic dispute between Oberon and Titania, the King and Queen of the Fairies.
Key Elements of the Chaos
- The Love Square: Lysander loves Hermia, Hermia loves Lysander, Demetrius loves Hermia, and Helena is desperately chasing Demetrius. Throw in some magical "love-in-idleness" flower juice, and everyone starts loving the wrong person.
- The Mechanicals: A group of well-meaning (but hilariously inept) craftsmen are rehearsing a play for the Duke’s wedding. Their lead actor, Bottom, famously ends up with the head of a donkey thanks to the mischievous sprite Puck.
- The Puck Factor: At the center of the mess is Robin Goodfellow (Puck), whose accidental mix-ups drive the plot and provide the play’s most iconic line: "Lord, what fools these mortals be!"
