School dropout Choo has recently been transferred to an elite, authoritarian girls' school in Singapore. There, due to her rebellious attitude, she immediately gets along with the other misfits in her class: Vanessa, Sofia, and Gina. Inspired by stories of triad gangs that rebelled against the authorities in colonial Singapore, they secretly form their own gang. Initially, they are inseparable, but as life after graduation approaches, cracks begin to appear in their close friendship.
With Amoeba, referring to an organism that is detached from the world around it and survives by isolating itself, Tan Siyou makes her feature film debut. The film is a witty coming-of-age story about unforgettable friendships that arise from resisting the norm, especially in an environment where every action is closely monitored and connection itself can be an act of rebellion.
The screenings on 11 and 12 April include a Q&A with director Tan Siyou.
Tan Siyou is a Los Angeles-based filmmaker from Singapore. Her short films Hello Ahma (2019), Strawberry Cheesecake (2021), and Cold Cut (2024) premiered at festivals such as Cannes, Berlinale, Toronto, and Locarno.
