During this event, various speakers will look back on the work and life of Zaan couturier Peter Rozemeijer. His designs, known for their striking colors, artistic shapes, and asymmetrical silhouettes, reflect both modern art and personal expression. This event highlights Rozemeijer's creative process, his influence on the Dutch fashion world, and the position he held within the Amsterdam art and LGBTIQ+ scene.
Peter Rozemeijer grew up in Wormer and trained at the Vakschool voor Kleermakers in Amsterdam. He gained work experience with, among others, the already famous Fong Leng and felt at home in the Amsterdam LGBTIQ+ scene. In 1975, he opened his own shop in the Jordaan district of Amsterdam, 'Boutique Peter Rozemeijer'. He did everything himself: from design and production to sales and fashion shows. He died in 1987 at the age of 40.
In 2025, the Historical Society of Wormer donated eight of Rozemeijer's creations to the Zaans Museum. These are the very first pieces by this famous Zaan fashion designer in the collection. The designs are colorful, artistic, and full of asymmetry, showcasing Rozemeijer's unique style. He was inspired by Mondrian, Kandinsky, and De Stijl, among others, and effortlessly combined market finds like a bedspread with luxurious fabrics.
