A Space to Move Freely and Authentically

For many in the queer community, finding spaces where you can express yourself without reservation is essential. CREA, the cultural student center of the UvA and HvA, is fostering such an environment with its new Queer Dance course. This isn't just about learning choreography; it's an invitation to explore your identity, connect with the community, and celebrate yourself through the power of dance.

What to Expect from the Course

Led by instructor Hugo de Graaf, the course uses a foundation of modern and jazz dance as a starting point for a deeper exploration. Each session is built around specific queer themes, which are explored over several weeks through both technical exercises and creative improvisation.

Participants will engage in exercises designed to build connection and awareness, such as working with 'negative space' in pairs to understand the dynamics of the space around us. The focus is less on perfect technique and more on holistic, organic movement, ensuring that everyone can participate comfortably. The course is a unique opportunity to co-create choreography that reflects the group's shared and individual experiences.

While allies are welcome, the course content and discussions will remain centered on the LGBTQIA+ community, creating a focused and affirming environment.

Who Can Join?

Everyone is welcome! The class is explicitly designed for all levels, whether you're a seasoned dancer or have never set foot in a studio before. The only requirement is an open mind and a willingness to move. Just be sure to wear comfortable clothing that you feel good in. The classes will be held barefoot or in socks.
