A Historic Moment, Reimagined

On April 1, 2001, as the clock struck midnight, Amsterdam changed the world. In a groundbreaking ceremony, then-mayor Job Cohen officiated the weddings of four same-sex couples, making the Netherlands the first country on earth to legalize marriage equality. The event sent ripples of hope across the globe, inspiring countless activists and paving the way for similar legislation in dozens of other nations.

Now, 25 years later, the city of Amsterdam is set to honor that pivotal moment. In a special anniversary event, the city is searching for four LGBTQ+ couples who wish to get married in a unique ceremony that echoes that historic night.

Your Chance to Be Part of History

On the night of April 1st, at the stroke of midnight, four couples will be joined in matrimony by the Mayor of Amsterdam or an alderman. This is a unique opportunity to celebrate your love story as part of a significant milestone in our community's history.

More Than Just a Celebration

While the 25th anniversary is a cause for immense pride and celebration, the city also acknowledges the current climate where hard-won LGBTQ+ rights are facing renewed pressure. This event is therefore not just a party; it's a powerful statement. It's a reaffirmation of Amsterdam's commitment to being a city where everyone can be themselves and a reminder of the profound importance of equal rights for all.

By participating, you're not only starting a new chapter in your life but also helping to shine a global spotlight on love, equality, and the enduring spirit of Amsterdam.
