AMSTERDAM – The Amsterdam Rainbow Dress, a prominent symbol of the global fight for LGBTQIA+ rights, will be the centerpiece of a new multimedia installation at the Dutch National Opera & Ballet during WorldPride 2026. The exhibition, titled "Amsterdam Rainbow Dress – Unfolded Voices," is scheduled to run from 25 July to 8 August 2026, coinciding with the artwork's tenth anniversary.
A Fusion of Art, Music, and Testimony
Presented as a collaboration between the Amsterdam Rainbow Dress Foundation and the Dutch National Opera & Ballet, "Unfolded Voices" aims to create an immersive experience for visitors. The installation will surround the dress with newly composed music by Thomas van Dun, video projections, and a libretto by writer Fleur Pierets featuring personal stories from LGBTQIA+ individuals around the world. According to the organisers, the project invites reflection on themes of freedom, oppression, resistance, and hope.
The Dress as a Living Monument
First created in 2016, the Amsterdam Rainbow Dress is a work of art with a diameter of over 16 meters, constructed from the national flags of every country where being LGBTQIA+ is illegal. When a country repeals such laws, its flag is replaced with a rainbow flag. The ultimate goal is for the dress to be composed entirely of rainbow flags, signifying the end of state-sponsored homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia worldwide. This exhibition offers a moment to contemplate the progress made and the significant work that remains.
