COLOGNE, GERMANY – Organisers of Radical Pride Cologne have detailed their plans for a week-long queer-feminist festival from July 13-18, 2026, positioning the event as a staunchly anti-commercial and political alternative to mainstream Pride celebrations. The event, which culminates in a large street festival, aims to recenter the queer liberation movement on its activist roots.
For those in the Netherlands looking for a Pride experience with a strong political focus, Cologne offers a compelling alternative just a short train ride away. The event is organised by an independent collective and intentionally rejects corporate sponsorship to focus on issues of intersectionality, mutual aid, and systemic oppression.
A Radically Different Approach to Pride
The philosophy of Radical Pride Cologne is built on being "intersectional & inclusive, against commercialisation, and radically caring." The organisers state they are creating a space that particularly centers queer, trans, inter, non-binary, and agender people, as well as disabled individuals, sex workers, and Black, Indigenous, and People of Color communities. This approach stands in contrast to the large, corporate-sponsored parades common in many major cities.
Festival Week Breakdown
The event is structured as a full week of activities, building up to the main festival on Saturday.
Community & Workshops (July 13-17)
The week leading up to the main event features a series of community-led workshops and gatherings across Cologne. Highlights from the preliminary schedule include:
- Protest Singing: A sing-along evening focused on feminist and queer protest songs.
- Queer Improvisation Workshop: A session on using sound, text, and movement for physical and mental well-being.
- Self-Defence Training: A beginner-friendly self-defence class specifically for queer individuals.
- Official Opening Party: The week kicks off with a drag show, "Scissor Inn²: Heat," hosted by the Flamin Hot Bussys collective at the Oya community space in Mülheim on Friday, July 17.
Main Street Festival (July 18)
The week culminates in a large, open-air street festival on Saturday, July 18, from 14:00 to 21:00 in the Cologne-Kalk district. The festival will feature a diverse stage program with live music, drag performances, and political speeches. The moderation will be in both German and English, with German Sign Language (DGS) interpretation provided.
Alongside the stage, attendees will find:
- Community Booths: Over two dozen grassroots organisations and activist groups will host informational stands.
- Interactive Workshops: On-site sessions will cover topics like radical queer friendships and a critical look at psychiatry as a tool of social control.
- Food & Drink: The festival will include a Küfa (Küche für Alle / Kitchen for All), providing community-cooked vegan and vegetarian meals on a donation basis, ensuring affordability.
Artist & Performer Lineup
The program features a range of artists, including drag artist and musician Francesco Manifesto, streetdance performer Chrissy from the street, and the Turkish-German musical duo İki Zeytin. DJ sets from artists like Afriiman and Rina R!ot will also be part of the day's events.
