UTRECHT – The 46th edition of the Netherlands Film Festival (NFF) will open with the world premiere of Downtown, a new drama from acclaimed director Michiel van Erp. The film chronicles the lives of three friends immersed in Amsterdam's vibrant gay scene before the arrival of the AIDS epidemic, and their reunion decades later.
A Story of Friendship and Loss
Downtown follows three young men who dive headfirst into the hedonistic nightlife of 1980s Amsterdam. Their world of freedom and discovery is irrevocably changed by the emergence of a mysterious new illness, which casts a long shadow over their lives and community. The narrative then jumps forward to 2021, where the friends, now older, attempt to reconnect and navigate their shared history during the quiet of a city in lockdown.
A Personal History on Screen
The film is deeply personal for its creators. The screenplay, written by Frank Houtappels (Gooische Vrouwen), is based on the memories of both Houtappels and director Michiel van Erp from that period. Van Erp, known for projects like Ramses and Niemand in de Stad, described his motivation for the film:
"With Downtown, I primarily wanted to make a film about friendship and connection. The community I entered as a young man in my twenties felt almost unreal: warm, free, and full of life... But the film is also about how your innocence slowly disappears. About losing friends. It's important to know where you come from—not to get stuck in the past, but to be able to carry the pain together and look forward."
Premiere and Nationwide Screenings
The official opening of the NFF will take place on the evening of Friday, 25 September, at the Stadsschouwburg in Utrecht. Director Michiel van Erp and cast members, including Yorick van Wageningen, Hans Kesting, and Roeland Fernhout, are expected to attend. For those outside of Utrecht, public screenings of Downtown will be held in cinemas across the Netherlands on the same evening, with some featuring appearances by the cast and crew.
Following its festival debut, Downtown is scheduled for a wider cinema release on 1 October.
