HAMBURG – In a stark display of contradictory messaging, security at the Europa Passage shopping center in Hamburg denied entry to several people carrying rainbow flags during the city's Christopher Street Day (CSD) festivities on Saturday. The incident occurred just meters away from the official CSD street festival, and ironically, while the shopping center itself had a large Pride flag flying from its roof.
Multiple visitors reported being stopped by security staff at the entrances. According to eyewitnesses and police reports, attendees were told they had to roll up or conceal their Pride flags to be allowed inside. The security team repeatedly cited the shopping center's 'house rules' as justification for the ban.
The situation escalated as some visitors refused to hide their flags, leading to disputes. One witness reported that three men were issued a ban from the premises for not complying. The Hamburg police confirmed they were called to the shopping center on several occasions throughout the day to mediate the conflicts.
"After initial findings, the security service repeatedly denied access to people with visible rainbow flags at two side entrances," a police spokesperson told local media. Officers on the scene engaged with the security staff, who continued to refer to their authority to enforce house rules.
Following the final police intervention, the practice was reportedly stopped, and visitors with flags were allowed to enter. The incident drew criticism online, with many pointing to it as a clear example of 'pinkwashing'—where a company or organization uses the symbols of the LGBTQ+ community for positive marketing without offering genuine support.
The juxtaposition of the flag on the roof and the ban at the door created a frustrating and confusing experience for CSD participants looking to use the facilities or shops in the centrally located mall. The management of Europa Passage has not yet commented on the security team's actions.
The incident served as a sour note on an otherwise celebratory day, where an estimated 300,000 people took to the streets of Hamburg to celebrate Pride.
