French singer-songwriter Pomme (Claire Pommet) has offered another glimpse into her upcoming album with the release of her new single, "mononoke". The track, which blends folk-pop with a distinctly ethereal atmosphere, draws its inspiration from the artist's recent residency in Japan.
Co-produced with Aaron Dessner, known for his work with The National and Taylor Swift, "mononoke" was born from Pomme's time at the Villa Kujoyama in Kyoto. Its title and thematic core are a direct nod to the ancient forests of Yakushima island, the real-world setting that inspired Hayao Miyazaki’s animated film Princess Mononoke. The song weaves together a sense of childhood wonder with a more mature journey of self-discovery, a recurring theme in Pomme's work.
"mononoke" is the second single from her fifth studio album, la forteresse, which is scheduled for release on November 20, 2026. It follows the album's lead single, "seule dans la foule".
An Artist Rooted in Queer Experience
Pomme, who identifies as a late-blooming lesbian, has become a significant voice for queer representation in the French music scene and beyond. While she tends to avoid writing overtly political anthems, her music is deeply personal, often exploring love and intimacy through a queer lens. She was previously married to Quebecois singer Safia Nolin.
Her commitment to community extends beyond her lyrics. Pomme is known for actively promoting visibility and equity behind the scenes, frequently hiring all-female and queer touring and production crews. Her work consistently touches on themes of feminism and environmentalism, creating a body of work that resonates with many in the LGBTQ+ community who value introspective storytelling and authentic representation.
Fans in the Netherlands may remember her performances at venues like Amsterdam's Melkweg, where her intimate and heartfelt style has previously been on full display.
