In the lead-up to WorldPride Amsterdam 2026, the Netherlands-Germany Society in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut explores this paradox: how far have we come, and how vulnerable are hard-won rights? With contributions from Oberbürgermeister Felix Heinrichs of Mönchengladbach (Germany), Dr. Masuma Shahid, winner of the Max van der Stoel Human Rights Awards 2025 (Erasmus University Rotterdam), and Dr. Anne Louise Schotel of the Social and Cultural Planning Office, this evening offers historical context, reflection on contemporary debates and space for dialogue. Using the history of queer emancipation in the Netherlands and Germany, we will discuss the journey from exclusion to visibility, legal equality and social acceptance — and the challenges of today.
