Cleo Reed deconstructs the traditions of Black musical history and uses them to build a world entirely of their own. Country, folk, blues and soul come together with distorted electronica, experimental compositions and rap. Reed also works with self-made instruments, textiles and installations, which form part of their performances.

The 2025 album ‘CUNTRY’ centres on the anger that arises when labour takes possession of the body. The first half of the album draws on American work songs and the Southern roots of Reed’s family. From there, the album takes a turn: the music becomes more electronic, menacing and rap-driven, shaped by their upbringing in New York. As such, ‘CUNTRY’ sounds both like a tribute to Black music history and a refusal to be confined by that history. The album was recognised by Pitchfork and NPR Music, amongst others, as one of the best records of 2025.

Cleo Reed is a Black, queer, and non-binary multidisciplinary artist. Their experimental roots music frequently touches on themes of labor, survival, and heritage, deeply intertwining their queer identity with underground and folk musical traditions.
