After years of hiding his identity in the hyper-masculine world of ice hockey, former player Jesse Kortuem shares his story, crediting the fictional queer romance 'Heated Rivalry' and a real-life gay hockey community for giving him the courage to finally be himself.

The Unlikely Assist from Fiction

For many athletes, the locker room is a sanctuary. For hockey player Jesse Kortuem, it was a place of constant fear, a space where he felt forced to hide a fundamental part of himself. After walking away from the sport he loved, Kortuem has now publicly come out as gay, and the catalyst for his decision wasn't a fellow athlete or a public campaign, but a fictional TV show: Heated Rivalry.

The show, which depicts a romance between two rival male hockey players, has had a profound, real-world impact. "Never in my life did I think something so positive and loving could come from such a masculine sport," Kortuem explained. "I know many closeted and gay men in the hockey world are being hit hard by Heated Rivalry's success." His story is a testament to the power of representation and the long journey many queer athletes face.

A Life on Thin Ice

Growing up in Minnesota, the self-proclaimed "State of Hockey," the sport was more than a game for Kortuem; it was his identity. But beneath the surface, he carried a secret he believed could never coexist with his passion.

"I loved the game, but I lived with a persistent fear. I wondered how I could be gay and still play such a tough and masculine sport."

This internal conflict became unbearable. Believing that his two worlds—the tough hockey player and the young gay man—could never occupy the same space, he made a difficult choice at 17: he walked away from his high school team and the brotherhood he had known for years.

Even when he returned to the ice in adult leagues years later, out in other areas of his life, the locker room remained a closet. "I spent every week in a locker room with guys I respected, yet I still did not feel safe enough to tell them who I truly was," he shared. He would deflect questions about his personal life, choosing silence over the risk of rejection.

Finding a New Team

The turning point came in 2017. On the verge of hanging up his skates for good, Kortuem took one last chance and signed up for the Sin City Classic, a large LGBTQ+ sporting event in Las Vegas. The experience was transformative.

"I met a group of guys from across the US and Canada who were hockey players like me and were also gay," he recalls. "From that moment forward, my life has never been the same."

This discovery of community—of finding people who shared his love for the sport without judgment—was the first step toward reconciling his identity. It's a journey familiar to many in our own community here in the Netherlands, where LGBTQ+ sports clubs provide vital safe spaces for athletes to be their authentic selves. Kortuem found his place with clubs like the Vancouver Cutting Edges and the Toronto Misfits, building friendships that allowed him to slowly dismantle the closeted persona he had maintained for so long.

A Message of Hope

His recent experience playing with The Cutting Edges Hockey Club, wearing a jersey that represented both his sport and his community, felt like a final bridge had been built. Inspired by the cultural conversation sparked by Heated Rivalry, he felt it was time to share his journey publicly.

"This is my story," Kortuem concluded in his statement. "I want to speak to the athletes out there who are still in the closet or struggling to find their way. I want you to know that there is hope and you’re not alone. There is a life and a deep happiness waiting for you on your path. You will get through this, and it is going to be okay."
