As summer approaches, Antwerp Pride has unveiled 'Fearless' as the theme for its nineteenth edition, scheduled to take place from August 4th to 9th. The organisation states the theme is a deliberate and direct response to a palpable sense of anxiety within the LGBTQ+ community regarding the current political landscape in Europe and beyond.
The decision was finalised following a series of community discussions last autumn. "A clear tension emerged from those conversations," explained Antwerp Pride president Geert van Praet. "It was about a growing fear of the rise of the far-right in Europe, influenced by figures like Donald Trump, Viktor Orbán, and Vladimir Putin, and the impact of the manosphere on social media."
A Theme Born from Community Dialogue
According to Van Praet, the discussions also highlighted concerns that society, particularly the younger generation, is experiencing a conservative shift. However, the sentiment was not one of despair. "At the same time, there was also hope and resilience in the conversations, fueled in part by the massive turnout at the Pride in Budapest," he noted.
With 'Fearless', the organisation aims to channel these complex feelings into a powerful statement. "Fear must not paralyze us. On the contrary, it is precisely in this context that courage, solidarity, and connection are essential," Van Praet emphasized. The theme is not about the absence of fear, but the choice to act in spite of it.
"It means we choose to remain visible, despite that fear—for ourselves, for each other, and within society," he added. "Pride originated in 1969 thanks to people who were 'fearless.' We still stand on those shoulders, even though our society has changed enormously."
Addressing Last Year's Tensions in Antwerp
The theme also carries a specific local resonance. Van Praet directly referenced the tensions from last year's event, when a demonstration against Antwerp Pride was permitted by the city and police. "Not only was it allowed, but people from our own community were arrested," he said. "That caused great unrest within the community."
In response, the organisation has engaged in what Van Praet describes as "constructive talks" with the city in recent months. The stated goal is to ensure the parade remains a secure environment for the community and its allies. "The great Pride Parade must be a safe environment for our community and our sympathizers," he affirmed.
