In cinemas now - a Spanish-Dutch co-production set in Utrecht explores a man's journey of self-discovery after he impulsively abandons his life in Spain. The film, titled Away (original Catalan title: Molt Lluny), follows a man from the hyper-masculine world of football ultras as he begins to reconcile with his queer identity while stranded in the Netherlands.
The story centers on Sergio, played by Spanish actor Mario Casas, a devoted football supporter who travels to Utrecht for an away match. Overwhelmed by a sudden panic attack and a desire to escape the pressures of his life, he decides not to return to Barcelona. He cuts off all contact with his past and is left to navigate a new life in a country where he has no money, no shelter, and does not speak the language.
While the initial premise focuses on survival, the film's core theme is what director Gerard Oms describes as a "late coming-of-age" story. As Sergio confronts loneliness and fear, he is forced to rediscover himself and come to terms with his identity. The narrative contrasts the rigid masculinity of his football background with the vulnerability required to build a new, more authentic life.
A Dutch and Queer Cinema Connection
Away is a co-production between Spain's Zabriskie Films and Amsterdam-based Revolver Amsterdam, grounding the story in both cultures. For his role, Casas reportedly prepared by studying performances in notable queer films, including Heath Ledger in Brokeback Mountain and Josh O'Connor in God's Own Country.
The film is the feature directorial debut for Gerard Oms, who has worked as an acting coach for Mario Casas on previous projects. Oms has stated that the story is partly based on his own life experiences, adding a personal layer to Sergio's journey.
The cast also includes David Verdaguer and Ilyass El Ouahdani. Away will be shown in cinemas in the Netherlands from July 16th as part of the "Queer Filmzomer" (Queer Film Summer) program at select venues, including Het Ketelhuis in Amsterdam. The film is in Spanish with Dutch subtitles.
