Based on Jean Genet’s homo-erotic novel Querelle de Brest (1953), this film caused a considerable ruckus due to its raw depiction of the doomed love between two men. The criminal sailor Querelle visits Brest where he becomes embroiled in an exuberant gambling den come brothel led by Madame Lysiane (Jeanne Moreau). As Lysiane sings her favourite song 'Each man kills the thing he loves', Querelle (Brad Davis) loses himself in sadomasochist games with Nono (Franco Nero), Lysiane’s spouse.
